How to Keep Your Guests Dancing All Night Long

Writer: Christine KingeryChristine Kingery

Tip #1: Hire a Fantastic DJ to Keep the Party Going

If you want your guests dancing all night long, hiring a great DJ is key. A DJ can truly make or break your reception, so choosing the right one is crucial. A quality DJ company typically consists of 1 to 4 talented DJs. Be cautious of larger companies with 20+ DJs, where you often don’t find out who you’ll get until just two weeks before your wedding—this is a major red flag. While these companies may be more affordable, you want to work with a DJ who you can connect with and vibe alongside, not someone you meet at the last minute. A great DJ will also collaborate with your wedding planner to craft the perfect reception timeline. I’ve put together a list of amazing DJs to help you out!

Tip #2: Create a Must-Play and Do-Not-Play List

We’ve all been there: you’re on the dance floor, and then that song comes on—and you just want to run for cover. Avoid the dreaded "eyebrow raise and walk off" moment by creating a must-play list with your fiancé. Ask your VIP guests for song requests in advance, host a playlist-making party, and include a variety of music genres to keep things interesting. But here’s the key—don’t overdo it. Remember, you hired a DJ or band for a reason: they’re experts at reading the room and getting everyone excited to dance. Trust them to bring the right energy to the floor (and don’t forget Tip #1!).

Tip #3: Dance Floor Props

It might sound a little silly, but trust me—dance floor props are a game-changer! They give your guests something fun to interact with, and they’re especially great for the more shy or self-conscious dancers who need a little extra confidence. Props like glow sticks, inflatable guitars, cowboy hats, or even giant “fat heads” (of the bride and groom or your pets!) are always a hit. Not only do they get people on the dance floor, but they make for hilarious and memorable photos, too!
